Description: Language ideologies represent languages as inherently good or bad, as controllable or perfectable, and above as having the power to create or destroy the social order. How do people conceptualize language in order to attribute such power to it, and what are those images of language really about?

Description:
In the past decade, elite U.S. undergraduate institutions have taken great pains to present themselves as "diverse." Based on several dozen student interviews, I examine what it means for Puerto Rican and other Latino students to serve as embodiments of "diversity" at a small liberal arts college.
